Newland Hits Two Home Runs; Seven-Run Fifth Leads DSU past Eastern

Junior Mike Newland hit two home runs in the 14-4 win over Eastern on Friday afternoon.

Center Valley, PA (April 9, 2010) – Junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) hit two home runs and knocked in four runs and the DeSales University baseball team scored seven runs in the fifth inning breaking open a close game en route to a 14-4 win over Eastern University in the first game of a three-game weekend set with the Eagles on Friday afternoon at Butz Field.

The Bulldogs (14-9, 9-1 Freedom) scored in each of the first three innings including four runs in the third frame including a two-run home run from sophomore Jason Hadinger (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) to take a 6-2 lead.

Eastern (10-5, 5-5 Freedom) answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull within two (6-4) but the Bulldogs exploded for seven tallies in the fifth to put the game away. Sophomore Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a two-run triple and Newland hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot as the big blows in the inning.

Freshman David Drinks (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) improved to 5-0 on the year battling thru seven innings allowing five hits and four runs, while striking out six. Drinks retired the last 12 batters he faced in the win. Junior Alex Brown (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) pitched the final two innings allowing just three hits and striking out three.

Kavetski finished with three hits and two RBIs, Newland had two hits, scored three times, and had four RBIs, senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) had two more hits and scored twice, junior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, Hadinger had two hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs and freshman Derek Chrismer (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) had two hits in the win.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow as they finish up this weekend's three-game set with the Eagles in St. David's, PA with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm in Freedom Conference action.
