BOX SCORE vs. FDU-Florham
Boyertown, PA (May 8, 2010) – The DeSales University baseball team saw its 2010 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon dropping two games in the Freedom Conference playoffs, falling to Manhattanville College, 10-3, in the first game before being eliminated in the double elimination Freedom Conference baseball tournament by FDU-Florham, 6-4, in the nightcap.
The losses mean Manhattanville College will take on FDU-Florham for the Freedom Conference championship on Sunday with the Devils needing to defeat the Valiants twice coming from the loser's bracket. The Bulldogs season ends with a 25-17 overall record.
In the first game on Saturday, DSU fell behind early as MVille (21-19-1 overall) scored four runs in the top of the second inning. The Bulldogs battled back scoring once in the fourth and twice in the sixth to pull within 5-3, but a solo run in the seventh and four more tallies in the eighth put the game away forcing DSU into the loser's bracket game at 7:00 pm.
Freshman David Drinks (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) suffered his first loss of the season, but showed tremendous effort in the loss allowing just three hits over the final 4.2 innings after allowing eight over the first two innings. Drinks batted thru 6.2 innings allowing six runs and keeping DeSales in the game.
Sophomore Ethan Moser (Barto, PA/Boyertown) was the story at the plate going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School) had one hit and scored twice in the loss to the Valiants.
In the second game, DeSales took a 1-0 lead and after falling behind 2-1, scored three times in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. The lead was 4-3 thru six innings before the Devils scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and the Bulldogs were unable to score over the final six innings to fall by a 6-4 score.
All nine Bulldog starters had a hit but only one had multiple hits, senior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades). Senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) knocked in two runs with a big single in the third inning and Slonaker had a double to finish the season with a school-record 22 two-baggers.
Freshman Dan Gayeski (New Castle, DE/Salesianum) took the loss but was excellent on the mound allowing seven hits and four earned runs over 6.2 innings keeping DeSales in the game throughout the evening.
