Center Valley, PA (October 4, 2011) – Sophomore
Lydia Younger buried a centering pass from fellow sophomore
Brady Walsh with 3:02 left on the game clock, lifting the DeSales University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-8-1 overall, while the Griffins fall to 2-7-2 overall. DSU out-shot short-handed GMC, 29-8, and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
DeSales took a 1-0 lead with 4:24 left in the opening half when Walsh collected a rebound off the crossbar following a shot from sophomore
Ariel Merkt and knocked it into the open net. It was Walsh' seventh tally of the year.
GMC tied the game in the 77th minute when senior
Gwen Conte scored on a penalty kick after
Brigid Dowling made a few nice moves inside the box drawing a foul from the Bulldog defense.
With less than four minutes left, Walsh ran down a pass over the top, beating two Griffin defenders to the ball and broke free down the right side. After dribbling into the box, she found a streaking Younger all alone in front of the net and Younger volleyed Walsh' centering pass home for the game-winner, Younger's first career goal.
Junior
Alex Bastinelli and freshman
Michelle Churchman each made one save.
DeSales returns to action on Saturday, October 8th when they travel to Eastern University for a Freedom Conference game beginning at Noon.
