Center Valley, PA (November 19, 2011) – The DeSales University women's basketball team shot just 32.7 percent and saw its 11-game home winning streak come to an end as Juniata College took home the Starter's Pub Tip-off Tournament Title with a 59-43 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Sondrine Glovas led DeSales (1-1) for the second straight day as the only player to reach double digits with 15 points as she was lone Bulldog to be named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior
Cherelle Simmons had six points and eight rebounds and fellow senior
Hannah Smith had four steals in just 10 minutes of action after suffering a leg injury mid-way thru the first half.
Four players reached double digits for the Eagles (3-0) including sophomore
Kate McDonald with 16 points and seven rebounds, senior
Ashton Bankos with 11 points, five assists, and five steals, junior
Natalie Glinsky with 12 points, and junior
Jordan Speck with 11 points and five assists. McDonald and Speck were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Bankos was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player.
DeSales really struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 23.1 percent but kept itself in the game, holding Juniata to just 21 points and forcing 16 turnovers. DSU pulled within one, 17-16, on a three-pointer from junior
Taylor Greene at the 6:03 mark but then went cold, not scoring the rest of the half and for the first 3:06 of the second half as Juniata used an 11-0 run to take a 28-16 lead with 17:04 left in the second half.
The Bulldogs pulled with eight on two different occasions over the next few minutes but the Eagles got three straight three-pointers from Speck over a three minute span to take a 52-33 lead with 8:22 left and never looked back.
In the consolation game, Widener University (1-2) forced 34 Wesley (0-3) turnovers and rolled to a 70-47 win over the Wolverines. Junior
Kate Dellinger earned All-Tournament Team honors for the Pride with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while junior
Rachelle Allen totaled 21 points to earn All-Tournament Team honors for Wesley.
DeSales returns to action on Tuesday, November 22nd when they host local rival Moravian College in a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
