Center Valley, PA (November 22, 2011) – The DeSales University women's basketball team committed 24 turnovers leading to 27 Moravian College points as the Greyhounds upended the Bulldogs, 66-50, in the annual non-conference battle two days before Thanksgiving in Billera Hall on Tuesday night.
Moravian (1-3) also shot 44.3 percent from the field as compared to just 25.0 percent for the Bulldogs (1-2), but the turnovers led to DSU's demise as the Greyhounds were able to get into transition and score several easy baskets off the DeSales miscues.
Three players reached double figures for the Bulldogs, who were without starting point guard, senior
Hannah Smith, due to an injury. Sophomore
Sondrine Glovas had a team-high 11 points and added four steals, freshman
Alex Suk added 10 points and pulled down seven boards, and junior
Colleen Gavin totaled 10 points and nine boards in 22 minutes off the bench.
Sophomore
Faith Gilbert totaled nine points and junior
Taylor Greene finished with a game-high nine assists and six rebounds.
Moravian received a huge game from senior
Alexandra Blair with 15 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, and seven blocks. Sophomore
Katie O'Rourke totaled 10 points and seven boards, junior
Amanda Kreuder and sophomore
Laura Jordan each added nine points, and freshman
Alexis Wright totaled eight points and six rebounds.
Moravian jumped out to a 26-15 lead just over 10 minutes into the game before the Bulldogs answered with a 14-3 run to tie it at 29 with 5:39 left to play in the opening half. Gilbert led the charge with seven points during the stretch.
The Greyhounds answered with six straight points and continued to lead by four as DeSales finished the half missing its last eight shots and committing four turnovers after tying it at 29.
The Bulldogs came out strong to start the second half, scoring the first four points to tie the game at 36 and trailed by just two points, 44-42, with 16:01 left after opening the second half converting 4-of-9 from the field.
DSU couldn't find the shooting touch from that point forward, shooting just 1-for-21 over the final 16 minutes and just 16.7 percent from the field in the second half as Moravian slowly increased its lead, which peaked at 17 points before the 66-50 final tally.
The Bulldogs did do a nice job on the boards, out-rebounding Moravian, 46-43, and scoring nine second chance points. DeSales gets a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action on Wednesday, November 30th when they dive into Freedom Conference play with an important early season road contest at FDU-Florham beginning at 6:00 pm.
