Gwynedd Valley, PA (December 10, 2011) – The DeSales University women's basketball team shot just 33.3 percent for the game and was out-scored by 10 points in the second half in a 68-59 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Complex.

Sophomore Sondrine Glovas led DeSales (4-4) with 15 points, sophomore Alexiah Grant added a career-high 11 points off the bench, and senior Cherelle Simmons tallied 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.  Freshman Mikely Mackavage played well off the bench with seven points, junior Colleen Gavin also pulled down eight boards, and junior Taylor Greene dished out a game-high nine assists.

Jess Rotella led the Griffins (5-3) with 22 points, including a 10-for-12 effort from the line, and Bryn Cotteta added 15 points.   Nicole Dougherty led the charge off the bench with 10 points.

Both teams shot poorly in the opening half but DeSales never trailed and led by as many as seven points on a few different occasions including 25-18 with 51 seconds left before GMC closed the half on a 6-0 run thanks in part to two DeSales turnovers as the Griffins gained some momentum, trailing by just one, 25-24, despite only shooting 6-for-30 (20%) in the opening half.

In the second half, GMC took its first lead on a lay-up from Rotella before sophomore Faith Gilbert answered with a DeSales triple.  The Griffins slowly regained the lead and led by five (41-36) at the 12:50 before a 9-2 GMC run over the next two minutes made it a 12-point game (50-38) with 10:44 left to play.

DSU cut the margin down to nine points but six straight points, four from the charity stripe, pushed the advantage up to 15 points, the largest lead for any team on the afternoon with 7:01 left.  The lead was still 15 at the 5:57 mark when DeSales mounted a comeback using a 10-0 run ignited by a three from Mackavage and four straight points by Grant to close out the run.

The Griffins answered with five straight points over the next two minutes and connected on 5-of-6 from the line over the final 47 seconds to earn the win.

DSU turned the ball over 25 times in the game leading to 25 Gwynedd-Mercy points.  After shooting just 20.0 percent in the first half, GMC torched the nets at a 46.4 percent clip in the second half.  The Griffins also enjoyed a healthy advantage at the charity stripe, attempting 19 more foul shots (36 total) and converting 75.0 percent of its attempts.

The Bulldogs are off all week for finals and won't return to action till Tuesday, December 20th when they travel to Albright College for a non-conference game set to begin at 7:00 pm.
