Las Vegas, NV (December 27, 2011) – Carthage College used an 18-3 run over a nine-minute span in the first-half to take a 15-point lead and held off a few DeSales University rallies in the second half to earn a 57-51 win over the Bulldogs in the first game for both teams at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (5-5) were led by junior Colleen Gavin with a team-high 13 points and six rebounds and sophomore Sondrine Glovas with 10 points.  Freshman Alex Suk had a strong game off the bench with nine points and five steals.

Carthage (8-2) got 12 points and nine rebounds from Diana Jacklin, 10 points from Allison Groessl, and nine points each from Dani Ripkey and Kristi Schmidt.

A tie game at 13 with 11:08 left in the opening half was broken open by CC, using an 18-3 run over the next nine minutes to open up a 31-16 lead and continued to lead by 15 at the break (33-18).  DSU was just 1-for-9 from the field and committed six turnovers during the 15-point run for Carthage.

The Bulldogs made a few runs in the second half getting within 10 points twice, once at 38-28 and again at 45-35, but Carthage answered each rally with consecutive baskets to push the lead back up to 14+ points.  Trailing by 14 with 1:43 left, DSU scored the final eight points of the game to pull within six before time ran out on a desperation comeback.

DeSales shot just 31.6 percent from the field for the game and were out-rebounded by Carthage 47-29.  DSU did do a nice job, forcing 28 Carthage turnovers in the game.

The Bulldogs complete its two-game tournament at the D3hoops.com classic tomorrow when they take on WPI beginning at 4:00 pm (EST).
