Las Vegas, NV (December 28, 2011) – Junior Colleen Gavin recorded her first double-double of the season and sophomore Faith Gilbert had 15 points leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 69-61, in the second game of the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, NV.

Gavin finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in the win converting 7-of-9 from the free throw line and was the lone Bulldog named to the D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament Team.  Gilbert had 15 points, 10 of which came in the first half, and senior Cherelle Simmons also played well with 13 points, six boards, and three blocks in the win.  Sophomore Sondrine Glovas added nine points and freshman Mikelyn Mackavage gave DSU a lift off the bench with seven points.

WPI (3-7) saw Dani Davis and Siena Mamayek each score 13 points and Kelly Morgan add 10 points in the loss.  Theresa Logan finished with nine points and eight boards in the win.

DeSales (6-5) used a 12-2 run over a four minute span early in the first-half to take a nine point lead, 16-9, and extended that lead to 16 points (37-21) at the break thanks to a quick 7-2 spurt to end the half including four points from Gavin and a three from Gilbert.

The lead grew to as many as 20 points 1:30 into the second-half before WIP began chipping away at the margin.  Trailing by 13 points at the 11:41 mark, the Engineers used a 7-0 run to pull within six, 50-44, with 8:37 to go.

A jumper from Simmons and another one from Gavin pushed the lead back to double digits before an 8-1 run over the next four minutes pulled WPI within three points (55-52) with 4:37 left to play.  Gavin again answered with a jumper on the other end and Glovas converted a back-door lay-up off a nice feed from Gilbert to push DSU up seven with 3:39 remaining but the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch, holding off the Engineers by nine points.

DSU shot just 33.9 percent but was terrific from the line, hitting 73.5 percent (25-for-34).  The Bulldogs also held WPI to just 27.8 percent shooting in the first half, forced 26 Engineer turnovers, and enjoyed a 46-38 advantage on the glass in the game.

The Bulldogs are now finished for the 2011 calendar year and will return to action on Tuesday, January 3rd when they travel to Baruch College for a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
