Center Valley, PA (December 3, 2011) – Four players reached double digits led by sophomore
Sondrine Glovas with a game-high 21 points as the DeSales University women's basketball team rolled past Wilkes University, 84-56, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
The win is the 29-straight for DeSales (3-2, 2-0 Freedom) in the series. Glovas added seven rebounds and seven steals to her game-high 21 tallies. Junior
Colleen Gavin finished with 18 points and six rebounds, sophomore
Faith Gilbert totaled 12 points, and senior
Cherelle Simmons added 10 points and eight rebounds. Junior
Taylor Greene finished with a career-high 10 assists at the point guard spot.
Freshman
Elena Stambone came off the bench to score 15 points for Wilkes and senior
Whitney Connolly totaled 13 points in the loss.
Wilkes (3-3, 0-2 Freedom) hung around early using a 6-0 run to trail by just three points (17-14) at the 12:17 mark. The Bulldogs slowly increased its lead after that and eventually used an 8-0 run over a two minute stretch to extend a five-point advantage in to a 13-point lead with 7:14 left to play. Freshman
Alex Suk led that charge with four of the eight points.
The two teams went back-and-forth over the final seven minutes of the half as DeSales pushed its lead to as many as 14 points before a Stambone three with seven ticks left provided the halftime score, 44-33.
The second half was all DeSales as it held Wilkes to just 24.1 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes and used a 27-5 run over the first 10 minutes of the half to take a 71-40 lead and never looked back from there.
DSU shot 41.4 percent from the field as compared to just 31.5 percent for the Colonels. The Bulldogs also forced 35 WU turnovers, scoring 28 points off those turnovers and once again dominated the glass, out-rebounding Wilkes, 53-33.
DeSales has a quick turn-around as they travel cross-town on Monday evening, taking on nationally ranked Muhlenberg College in a non-conference game beginning at 7:30 pm.
