Bulldogs Back in Title Game for Fourth Straight Year

Center Valley, PA (February 23, 2011) – The DeSales University women's basketball team is one win away from winning a fourth straight Freedom Conference Title after defeating King's College, 66-52, to advance to the Freedom Conference Championship game on Saturday at home after Misericordia knocked out top seed, Manhattanville College, also on Wednesday.

The second seeded Bulldogs (18-8 overall) will host the fourth seeded Cougars on Saturday with tip set for 7:00 pm in Billera Hall. It marks the fourth straight year the Bulldogs will be in the title game and the third time they will host the game. The winner of the game will take home the Freedom Conference title and receive the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament set to begin next week.

Senior Lori Lidlow led the way on Wednesday night with game-high 24 points and added four assists and three steals. Junior Cherelle Simmons (10 pts., 11 reb.) and freshman Sondrine Glovas (10 pts., 12 reb.) each registered double-doubles and sophomore Colleen Gavin finished with eight points and five boards. Senior Megan Montchyk came off the bench to score five points and grab nine rebounds in the win.

Junior Paige Carlin finished with a team-high 17 points for the Lady Monarchs and sophomore Katlin Michaels had 12 points. Junior Brittany Muscatell added nine points and sophomore Lindsay Atchison finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and five assists in the loss.

Wednesday's game was almost a carbon copy of the first meeting between the two this season in Billera Hall. The first half was a back-and-forth tussle with DeSales leading almost the entire half with the exception of two ties. The lead however was never any higher than eight points until a 6-0 run to end the half put the Bulldogs up 36-27 at the break.

Simmons led the way with eight points and Lidlow totaled seven as eight different DeSales players reached the scoring column in the first half. DSU shot 46.7 percent from the field and out-rebounded King's, 21-13, in the opening twenty minutes.

DeSales broke the game open to start the second half just as it did in the first encounter in Billera Hall earlier this season. A 15-2 run to start the half pushed the lead up 21 points (51-30) as the Lady Monarchs scored just three points over the first eight minutes of the half. Lidlow led the way scoring 10 points during the spurt.

King's never got any closer than 12 points with just 40 seconds left in the game. The Bulldogs dominated the glass, out-rebounding KC, 50-27, including 21 offensive rebounds for a total of 18 second-chance points. DSU finished the game shooting 36.7 percent from the field and had 16 assists on 22 made baskets.
