San Antonio, TX (March 12, 2011) – It was a wild finish to the DeSales University baseball team's spring trip last week as the Bulldogs split two extra inning games vs. Cardinal Stritch University (WI) taking game one, 3-2, in eight innings before dropping the second game, 12-11, in nine innings.
For the trip, DSU finishes with a 4-4 overall record. The Bulldogs batted .263 as a team and posted a 5.37 ERA in their eight games. Leading the offensive attack was sophomore
Derek Chrismer, who batted a team-high .357 with four RBIs and junior
Jason Hadinger, batting .304 with a team-high eight RBIs.
On the mound, sophomore
Colby Pacillo had the best posting a 1-0 record with a team-low 1.46 ERA in a team-high 12.1 innings pitched. Pacillo allowed just two runs over 12+ innings and opponents batted just .217 off him. Sophomore
Dan Gayeski and junior
Travis Hughes also had strong weeks with Gayeski posting a 2.00 ERA with opponents batting just .188 off him, and Hughes totaling two wins with 16 strikeouts in 8.1 innings of relief action.
DeSales – 3, Cardinal Stritch – 2 (Game one)
Trailing by one run entering the bottom of the seventh inning, DeSales scored once in the seventh and once more in the eighth to earn the win. After a Chrismer single with two out in the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Kyle Kromberg pinch-ran, stole second, and later scored on an RBI base hit from senior
Doc Neiman to tie the game. DSU won it in the eighth, when Chrismer hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out scoring sophomore
Justin Scerbo. Hughes earned the win in relief, his second of the trip, pitching 2.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
Cardinal Stritch – 12, DeSales – 11 (Game two)
DeSales could not hold a lead in the second game. After scoring six runs, five unearned, in the first inning, CSU rallied with three runs in the third, one run in the sixth, and three more runs in the seventh to tie the game at seven. After the Bulldogs scored three times in the eighth, Stritch countered again with three runs in the bottom half of the inning re-tie the game at 10. DSU once again re-took the lead with a solo run in the ninth, but two runs by CSU gave Cardinal Stritch the 12-11 win. In both the seventh and eighth innings, DSU was one out away from winning the game.
Sophomore
David Drinks took the loss allowing five runs over 1.2 innings pitched. Junior
Nick Chiovitti led the way with four hits, senior
Ronnie Wentz had three hits and knocked in two runs, while Hadinger and Neiman each had two RBIs in the loss.
The Bulldogs return home and to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
