Bulldogs Rally for 7-3 Win over Misericordia

Sophomore Brian Mauro tied the game in the seventh with a pinch-hit single in the win on Sunday.

Center Valley, PA (March 27, 2011) – The DeSales University baseball team scored three times in the seventh and two more times in the eighth inning rallying for a 7-3 win over Misericordia University on Sunday afternoon in Freedom Conference action.

The Bulldogs improve to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Freedom Conference, while the Cougars drop to 9-4 overall and 0-1 in the Freedom.

Sophomore Dan Gayeski improved to 2-0 on the mound, pitching three innings of scoreless relief, striking out six. Sophomore David Drinks pitched well in the start, lasting six innings, scattering six hits and allowing three runs, striking out four.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, DSU took a 2-1 lead on RBI singles from senior Carson Slonaker and sophomore Chris Zucchi. Misericordia added solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 3-2 lead before the Bulldogs took control in the bottom of the seventh.

Slonaker started the rally with a double to lead-off the frame. Junior Jack Kavetski singled to put runners on first and third when sophomore Brian Mauro laced a first-pitch single to left-center tying the game at three. A single from junior Jason Hadinger gave DSU a 4-3 lead and after two straight walks, pinch-runner, senior Ronnie Wentz, scampered home on a wild pitch staking the Bulldogs to a 5-3 lead.

In the eighth, two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases before senior Doc Neiman hit a bloop single to right-center plating two runs and providing the final tally.

Kavetski scored two runs out of the lead-off spot in the order, Hadinger had one hit and one RBI, Neiman had two hits and knocked in two runs, Slonaker also had two hits, and Zucchi contributed a hit, run, and RBI in the win to lead the offensive attack.

The Bulldogs take Monday off and return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Montclair State University for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
