Center Valley, PA (April 3, 2011) – Perfect execution in extra innings of game one and an offensive explosion in game two led by junior
Jason Hadinger with two hits and five RBIs led the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Freedom Conference foe Wilkes University on Sunday afternoon giving the Bulldogs a chance to sweep the three-game set on Monday.
DeSales improves to 10-7 overall and 5-1 in the Freedom Conference with the sweep, while Wilkes falls to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in the Freedom Conference. These two teams will meet once again on Monday, finishing the three-game set with a single nine-inning game at Wilkes beginning at 3:30 pm.
In game one on Sunday, the Bulldogs never trailed but needed extra inning to put away the Colonels. DSU left 14 men on-base in the win, helping to keep Wilkes in the game. DeSales took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Hadinger doubled home junior
Jack Kavetski but Wilkes tied it at one in the fourth.
DSU made it 3-1 in the fifth when sophomore
Brian Mauro hit a two-RBI double over the right-fielder's head, but the Colonels wasted no time tying the game with two two-out runs to re-tie the game at three. The Bulldogs left two runners on-base in both the sixth and seventh innings but in the eighth broke thru.
Senior
Doc Neiman led off with a single up the middle. Hadinger laid down a perfect bunt down the third-base line and no one moved over to cover third base on the play as Neiman realized this and scampered over to third base on the throw to first base to get Hadinger. After junior
Ethan Moser was intentionally walked, senior
Carson Slonaker laid down another perfect bunt up the third base line. The third basemen fielded it, and threw to first as Neiman broke for home on the throw, scoring the winning run to end the game.
Junior
Travis Hughes earned the win, pitching 2.1 strong innings allowing just two hits. Sophomore
Dan Gayeski also pitched well, lasting 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight. Sophomore
Chris Zucchi had three hits, Neiman added two base knocks, and Mauro drove in two runs to lead the offensive attack. Hadinger was on-base four of five plate appearances with a hit, two walks, and a hit by pitch.
In the second game, the Bulldogs exploded at the plate, scoring four times in the second inning and seven more times in the third to take an 11-2 lead and blow open the game. The big shot came off the bat of Hadinger in the third, a towering three-run homer to make it 11-2.
Sophomore
David Drinks earned the win lasting five innings allowing just three hits and two runs, striking out three. Neiman had two more hits and two RBIs, Hadinger finished with two hits and five RBIs, Slonaker had three more hits and scored twice, and Kavetski scored two more times out of the lead-off spot.
