BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (April 7, 2011) – The DeSales University baseball team was unable to get anything going all day at the plate as the bats fell silent once again, managing just three hits in a 3-2 loss to Delaware Valley College in the series opener of the three-game set this weekend.

The Aggies (4-10, 1-3 Freedom) get their first win in Freedom Conference play scoring twice in the first inning and once more in the fourth to upset the Bulldogs (11-8, 6-2 Freedom). Chad Schmuck did most of the work on the mound for Delaware Valley lasting 7.1 innings allowing just three hits and both DSU runs. Jake Barben earned the save with a scoreless ninth, striking out two.

The Bulldogs scored their first run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Bill Marriott. DSU had rallies in both the eighth and ninth innings but each fell short.

In the eighth, three straight one-out walks loaded the bases for senior Carson Slonaker who knocked in a run on an RBI groundout to second base. Junior Jason Hadinger was intentionally walked to re-load the bases but junior Ethan Moser but grounded out to first to end the threat.

In the ninth, Marriott drew a two-out walk and freshman Justin Scerbo came on to pinch-run, stealing second to get into scoring position, but junior Kenny Ridge was caught looking at strikes to end the game.

Junior Jack Kavetski took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings allowing five hits and three runs. Sophomore Dan Gayeski came on to pitch three scoreless innings and sophomore David Drinks and junior Travis Hughes came on to pitch a scoreless ninth in the loss.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they will need to win both ends of a doubleheader at Delaware Valley College to take the series from the Aggies. First pitch in Doylestown, PA is set for 1:00 pm.
