Swoyersville, PA (May 1, 2011) – The DeSales University baseball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end as Misericordia University won both ends of a Freedom Conference doubleheader by scores of 7-1 and 7-3 on Sunday afternoon to steal away the top seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference playoffs.

The Bulldogs (19-16, 14-7 Freedom) finish as the #2 seed and will take on the #3 seed, FDU-Florham, in the opening round of the double elimination tournament next weekend. Misericordia (23-11, 14-6 Freedom) takes on the #4 seed, King's College, in the other opening round game. The Freedom Conference playoffs start on Friday late afternoon with all games being played at Quakertown's Memorial Park Friday thru Sunday. More details on game times, etc. will come later in the week.

In game one on Sunday the Cougars broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning scoring four runs, including two unearned runs, to take a 4-0 lead. DSU did get one back in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run from junior Ethan Moser but the Cougars added three more in the sixth and never looked back from there.

Junior Travis Hughes took the loss despite pitching well allowing just four hits over five innings and those four runs, two unearned. Moser had two of DSU's seven hits.

In the second game, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Bulldogs answered with a solo tally in the top of the second inning on an RBI ground out from senior Ronnie Wentz after junior Jason Hadinger tripled to lead-off the inning.

Misericordia however just kept pressuring the Bulldogs scoring once more in the bottom of the second and twice in the fourth and sixth innings. DSU did get one run in the fourth and sixth as well on an RBI single from sophomore Chris Zucchi and a solo home run from sophomore Brian Mauro.

Sophomore Dan Gayeski took the loss allowing seven hits and four earned runs over five innings, striking out four. Mauro finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and junior Jack Kavetski had two more hits out of the lead-off spot in the order.

The Bulldogs are not scheduled to play again until Friday when the Freedom Conference playoffs begin at Quakertown's Memorial Park.
