Doylestown, PA (January 14, 2012) – Sophomore Alexiah Grant capped off a career-high afternoon and her first career start in grand fashion hitting a driving lay-up at the buzzer lifting the DeSales University women's basketball team to a 76-74 win over Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon in James Work Gymnasium.

Grant had two free throws with 16 seconds left and DeSales (8-7, 3-1 Freedom) leading by one point but missed both free tosses.  DVC's (9-5, 1-3 Freedom) Brittany Battinieri was fouled on the other end on a drive to the basket but only converted the second of two freebies.

Without a timeout, senior Hannah Smith got the ball at mid-court dribbled into the lane and found a cutting Grant on the right-side.  She took one dribble and lofted a floater off the backboard and in as the buzzer sounded giving the Bulldogs an important road win in Freedom Conference play.

Grant finished with a career-high 18 points and fellow sophomore Sondrine Glovas also scored 18 points in just 18 minutes of action before fouling out.  Senior Cherelle Simmons added 16 points and eight rebounds, junior Colleen Gavin registered her third double-double of the season and the 12th of her career with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and freshman Alex Suk finished with eight points and 10 boards.

Delaware Valley saw four players reach double digits including Battinieri with 24 points, Emily Soper with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks, Brenna Coll with 14 points, and Grace Mirack added 14 points.

DSU took control early using a 12-1 run to take a 23-13 lead with 12:46 left in the opening half led by six points from Glovas.  The Bulldogs continued to lead by eight with 4:27 left before scored six straight points to pull within two and DeSales settled for a four-point halftime cushion, 36-32.

In the second half the Aggies were in control thru the first half of the second half building as much as a five-point lead, including 57-52 with 8:25 left to play.  DSU rallied using a 14-2 run over the next 3:26 to take a 66-58 lead with 4:59 remaining.  Glovas again keyed the run with six points and Gavin scored four during the spurt.

Two Grant free throws regained the eight-point lead with 3:47 to go and the Bulldogs still lead by six on two freebies from Suk but a Battinieri three and four straight Aggie points after two free throws from Simmons made it a one-point game setting up the final 16 seconds of action.

The Bulldogs did a much better job handling the ball, committing just 19 turnovers to make up for another tough shooting afternoon, canning just 33.8 percent from the field.  DSU also shot very well from the line, hitting 72.7 percent (24-for-33).

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, January 18th when they continue on the road with a big match-up with Misericordia University beginning at 6:00 pm.
