Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 28, 2012) – The DeSales University women's basketball team produced a terrific effort on the defensive end, allowing just 45 Lady Monarch points, but shot just 29.1 percent on the offensive end in a 45-40 loss to King's College in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Scandlon Gymnasium.

King's (16-3, 8-0 Freedom) only shot 26.1 percent from the field, but attempted nine more shots and 10 more free throws in the win.  Most of DeSales' (10-9, 5-3 Freedom) offensive struggles happened thru the first 12 minutes of the game as DSU did not make a field goal until the 7:56 mark, a short jumper from freshman Mikelyn Mackavage, to make it 14-3.

King's eventually led by 16, 22-6, before the Bulldogs chipped away to pull within 10 at the break (25-15).  DSU was just 5-of-24 from the field in the first-half but kept itself in the game forcing the Lady Monarchs into 12 turnovers and just 30.3 percent shooting on their end.

The Bulldogs played much better in the second half, scoring the first four points to pull within six (25-19).  King's led by seven (32-25) when DSU scored six straight on two buckets from junior Colleen Gavin and a jumper from sophomore Alexiah Grant to pull within one point (32-31).

DeSales still trailed by one point (34-33) at the 9:59 mark and had four possessions to take the lead but committed three turnovers and missed its only shot attempt and King's eventually took advantage scoring nine straight points to take a 10-point lead (43-33) with 5:31 to go.

The Bulldogs made one last run at the Lady Monarchs, pulling within four points (44-40) with 1:03 to go on a put-back from senior Cherelle Simmons.  KC missed a free throw on the other end, giving possession back to DeSales but two jumpers were off the mark as the Lady Monarchs iced the game with one free throw with eight seconds left on the other end.

Grant and Gavin each totaled 11 points as the lone Bulldogs in double digits.  Gavin also pulled down nine boards, while Grant had four steals.  Simmons finished with six points and 13 rebounds and fellow senior Hannah Smith finished with four assists and four steals in the loss.

Junior Katlin Michaels led King's with 10 points and nine boards.  Freshman Marissa Manning had nine points and 12 rebounds and senior Paige Carlin came off the bench to score eight points.

King's dominated the glass out-rebounding DeSales, 51-40, for the game.  The two teams combined to shoot just 2-for-30 from three-point land.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday when they return to Billera Hall to host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
