New York, NY (January 3, 2012) – Four players reached double digits including senior
Cherelle Simmons, who notched her third double-double of the season, leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past Baruch College, 80-75, in the first game of the 2012 calendar year for both teams on Tuesday evening.
Simmons finished with season-high totals of 16 points and 16 rebounds to record her third double-double of the year and the 18th of her career. Sophomore
Sondrine Glovas added 17 points and four steals, junior
Colleen Gavin finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore
Faith Gilbert totaled 11 points, including three treys in the win.
Junior
Taylor Greene dished out eight assists and freshman
Alex Suk played well with eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Baruch (5-5) was led by
Kiara Johnson with 19 points, including five three's,
Jessica Duleba with 12 points and 11 rebounds,
Folashade Akinde with 12 points, and
Toni Fenn with 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Turnovers were the story of the game for the Bulldogs (7-5) as they forced 25 Baruch miscues leading to 33 points on the other end.
A tight first half that saw neither lead by more than six points including BC at 8-2 in the early going and DSU at 30-24 with 2:38 left. Baruch scored the final three points of the half to pull within three at 30-27.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half with DSU converting just 23.5 percent of its attempts, and the Bearcats canning just 33.3 percent on the other end. The Bulldogs were a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line, helping them carry that three-point lead into the locker room.
Still up three points (45-42) at the 13:24 mark, DeSales used an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to build a 56-44 advantage as four different players scored led by five points from Suk. Baruch then started to get hot from outside the arc, hitting three treys over the next two minutes cutting the lead down to five points with 8:35 to go.
The lead was seven after a triple from Gilbert at the 5:31 mark before eight straight points from Baruch gave the Bearcats their first lead since the first half, 70-69, with 3:39 remaining. After trading baskets on the next two possessions, DeSales regained the lead for good on a jumper from Simmons and made it a three-point game with 48 ticks left after a jumper from Gavin.
One free throw from Baruch made it 75-73 with 37 seconds left. A DeSales turnover gave BC a chance to tie but a shot was off the mark and DSU hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to ice the game.
The Bulldogs rebounded from a poor shooting first-half, torching the nets in the second half at a 54.3 percent clip to shot 39.1 percent for the game. DSU was also an impressive 22-for-26 from the free throw line and out-rebounded Baruch, 50-44, in the win.
DeSales returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Messiah College for another non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
