Center Valley, PA (November 16, 2012) – Junior
Julia Duffy scored five of her seven points in overtime and junior
Sondrine Glovas' running lay-up 10 seconds left in overtime helped the DeSales University women's basketball team escape with a 67-66 win over Neumann University in the opening game of the Morgan Stanley (Easton office) Tip-off Tournament on Friday evening in Billera Hall.
Duffy sent the game into overtime with her first two points of the game at the buzzer to end regulation. Junior
Alexiah Grant drove the lane late in regulation looking to tie but her lay-up rimmed out and after the ball was tipped out to the top of the key and retrieved by senior
Taylor Greene, she calmly found Duffy under the basket alone and Duffy laid the ball in as the buzzer sounded to force overtime.
In the OT period, Duffy scored five of DSU's 14 points and Glovas rescued the Bulldogs late in the overtime period. With 36 seconds left, Glovas tied the game at 65 with two free throws and after Neumann's
Bethany Humenik missed the second of two freebies with 16 seconds left, Glovas grabbed the rebound and beat everyone down the court, converting a lay-up with 10 ticks left and the Knight's last two shots were off the mark as time expired with DSU escaping with a one-point win.
Grant finished the game scoring a game-high 19 points before fouling out in the overtime period. Glovas added 15 points and pulled down six rebounds and senior
Colleen Gavin had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Fellow senior
Taylor Greene finished with two points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and four steals and junior
Megan Gallagher added six points and eight boards before also fouling out.
Humenik led the Knights with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists, while
Erica Marvel had 14 points,
Colleen Hinde added 13 points, and
Brittany Wood came off the bench to score 11 points.
After a sluggish first-half by the Bulldogs they took control in the second-half using a 13-0 run mid-way thru the half to lead 45-38 but then went cold from the field.
A lay-up by Grant at the 5:42 mark was the only two points DSU could find over a span of four minute stretch but still led by four, 48-44, with 3:13 left to play. The Knights' then scored the next six points to lead, 50-48 before one free throw by Grant and a pull-up jumper just below the foul line by Glovas saw DeSales re-claim the lead, 51-50, with 1:15 to go.
Neumann, however, answered with three straight free throws around a Bulldog turnover and led 53-51 with 11 seconds left setting up the final stages of regulation.
After committing 13 first-half turnovers, the Bulldogs did a much better job in the second-half and overtime, only committing eight turnovers over the final 25 minutes of action. DSU, however, committed 29 total fouls for the game, repeatedly sending Neumann to the line where it was able to stay in the game, attempting 46 free throws and hitting 67.4 percent.
In the other game, Haverford College overcame a five-point halftime deficit to earn a 54-49 win over The College of New Jersey.
Elizabeth Lynch had 11 points,
Rachel Baskin added 10 points, and
Dominique Meeks finished with nine points and 13 boards to lead the Fords. TCNJ got 10 points each from
Candace Vigo and
Kelly Roddy in the loss.
DeSales will take on Haverford in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm, while TCNJ will face Neumann University in the consolation game beginning at 1:00 pm.
