Wilkes-Barre, PA (December 1, 2012) – Junior
Sondrine Glovas scored a game-high tying 23 points and led a huge second-half comeback as the Bulldogs overcame a 21-point deficit with 14:31 left to play to earn its 31st straight win over Wilkes University, 63-60, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.
Glovas scored 13 of her 23 points in the second-half and nailed five three-pointers on 11 attempts in the win. Senior
Colleen Gavin added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench, junior
Megan Gallagher added nine points and 10 boards, and junior
Faith Gilbert played well off the pine with seven points. Freshman
Brittany Pierzga had six points and nine rebounds.
Down 21 points (50-29) with 14:31 to go, the Bulldogs began its comeback with a jumper from Gilbert that ignited a 25-2 run over the next 8:05 ending with a short jumper from Gavin giving DSU a 54-52 lead with 6:26 left to play. Glovas led the charge with 11 of her 13 second-half points during the spurt.
It was back-and-forth the rest of the way and the Bulldogs trailing 58-57 with 3:45 to go, DSU scored the next six points over the next 1:20 to take a 63-58 lead. A lay-up from Pierzga started the run, Glovas followed with lay-up in transition, and Gallagher hit two clutch free throws with 2:25 to go to give DeSales the five-point lead.
The Colonel's
Megan Kazmerski broke free with 50 seconds left for an easy bucket in transition to cut it down to a three-point game but missed a three with 18 ticks left to tie it. Senior
Taylor Greene gave the Colonels one last chance after missing two freebies with 13 seconds left but a three at the buzzer from Wilkes'
Elena Stambone was blocked by Pierzga giving DSU the win.
Stambone finished with 23 points leading the Colonels and Kazmerski added 17 points, 14 of which came in the first-half. Ellen Rich had a game-high 12 rebounds.
DSU shook off an awful shooting first-half (23.8 percent) to shoot 45.2 percent in the second-half. DSU also forced 23 turnovers and out-rebounded Wilkes, 50-44, for the game.
DeSales returns to action on Monday when they host local rival Muhlenberg College in a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
