Center Valley, PA (December 8, 2012) – The DeSales University women's basketball team shot 52.0 percent in the second half and used a stifling defensive effort in a 70-46 blowout of #21 University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.

The history between these two teams is extensive with the 21st ranked Lady Royals (6-2) entering today's game with a 27-7 lead in the all-time series, many of which came during the time both teams resided in the Freedom Conference and made regular appearances in the post-season.  But since Scranton left the Freedom Conference for the Landmark Conference, DSU has had the upper hand winning all three career meetings including today's win, the largest for the Bulldogs in the 35-game history.

It was just like old times in the beginning with DSU leading 21-16 at the 7:45 mark of the first-half, UofS scored eight straight points including back-to-back three-pointers by Alison Sweeney to take a 24-21 lead.  The Bulldogs responded scoring the final 10 points of the half over the final 6:14 to take a 31-24 lead into the locker rooms.

Scranton shot 40.9 percent in the half as compared to just 33.3 percent for DeSales, but DSU forced 18 Lady Royal turnovers, leading to 14 Bulldog points in opening twenty minutes.

The second-half was all DeSales.  After finishing the half holding Scranton scoreless over the final 6:14, the Bulldog defense kept battling, holding the Lady Royals off the scoreboard for the first 2:53, extending its lead to 13 points.

A three from junior Sondrine Glovas pushed the margin up 17 points at the 13:51 mark and peaked to as many as 27 points in the second-half twice as the Bulldogs cruised home with its most lopsided win in the 35-game history with the Lady Royals.

Senior Colleen Gavin led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds and Glovas added 12 points.  Senior Taylor Greene was outstanding scoring a season-high nine points and handing out 11 assists spearheading the team effort of more assists (20) than turnovers (16) in the win.

Junior Megan Gallagher added 10 points off the bench and freshman Brittany Pierzga had a strong game with seven points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

Scranton's two Division I transfers, Meredith Mesaris and Erin Boggan, entered the game averaging a combined 38.2 points and 13.1 rebounds but were held to just 20 combined points on 6-of-16 shooting.  Lindsay Fluehr was a bright spot for Scranton finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs, who have struggled shooting the ball all season, torched the nets in the second-half largely due to its defense as DSU forced 30 Lady Royal turnovers leading to several fast break opportunities and 25 total points scored off those Scranton miscues.

The win snaps a two-game losing skid and gives DSU some momentum entering the holiday season.  DeSales is off all week for finals and will return to action on Sunday, December 16th when they host Emory and Henry College at 3:00 pm.
