Strong Second-Half Leads Bulldogs Past Wilkes, 66-54

Wilkes-Barre, PA (February 14, 2012) – Junior Colleen Gavin recorded her fifth double-double of the season and the DeSales University women's basketball team opened up as much as a 19-point second-half lead en route to a 66-54 win over Wilkes University in Freedom Conference action on Tuesday evening at the Marts Center.

Gavin finished with 16 points and 10 boards to lead the Bulldogs (14-10, 9-4 Freedom).  Sophomore Sondrine Glovas totaled 15 points and added five rebounds and five steals, sophomore Alexiah Grant finished with 11 points, and senior Cherelle Simmons totaled seven points, 10 rebounds, and four steals.

Senior Hannah Smith finished with a season-high nine assists and freshman Mikelyn Mackavage gave DSU a boost off the bench in the first-half with two three's.

The Bulldogs shot just 30.8 percent for the game and converted just 28.9 percent in the first half as Wilkes (6-18, 1-12 Freedom) erased a 10-point first-half deficit (24-14) with a 13-5 run to end the half, trailing by just two points (29-27) at the break.

In the second-half DSU took control, scoring the first 10 points of the half and holding the Colonels without a point until the 14:10 mark to lead 39-27.  The lead swelled to as many as 19 points (58-39) at the 7:07 mark.

DeSales still led by 17 with 4:22 to go when Wilkes scored eight straight points to pull within nine but the Bulldogs made 5-of-6 from the free throw line over the final 53 seconds to post the final margin.

The Bulldogs did an excellent job forcing 26 Colonel turnovers and also out-rebounded Wilkes, 42-37, for the game.

DeSales sits alone in third place entering the final regular season game of the year at Eastern University on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm.
