St. David's, PA (February 18, 2012) – The DeSales University women's basketball team used a 20-2 run late in the second-half to pull away and win its third straight game, 78-66, over Eastern University on Saturday afternoon to enter the Freedom Conference playoffs tied for second place but as the third seed in the Freedom post-season.
The Bulldogs (15-10, 10-4 Freedom) finish in a tie with Misericordia University in the Freedom Conference standings, but the Cougars earn the tiebreaker because of its win over King's College and will host the Bulldogs in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Playoffs at the Anderson Center beginning at 6:00 pm on Wednesday night.
Sophomore
Sondrine Glovas led the way on Saturday with a game-high 21 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. Senior
Hannah Smith tossed in a career-high 14 points, her first career game with double digit points, and also added five rebounds and five assists. Junior
Colleen Gavin finished with 10 points and four steals and freshman
Alex Suk totaled 12 points off the bench.
Freshman
Meghan Nowak led the Eagles with 25 points and nine rebounds, while senior
Bekah Roland and sophomore
Katie Lincoln finished with 10 points and seven assists.
Kaitlyn Dougherty added nine points and six steals in the loss.
DeSales trailed 24-23 with 5:41 left in the half before using an 11-2 run to take a 34-26 lead with 2:06 to go led by five points from Glovas and continued to lead by five at the break, 36-31. Glovas had nine and Suk seven points at the half.
A back-and-forth start to the second-half saw Eastern take a 52-50 lead with 10:30 left on the clock when the Bulldogs took control using a 20-2 run over the next seven minutes to lead, 70-54, with 3:22 to go. Again it was Glovas with nine points and Suk with five tallies during the game-clinching spurt leading the way.
DSU shot an impressive 42.9 percent from the floor for the game and 53.8 percent in the second-half. The Bulldogs also controlled the glass (39-32) and forced 28 Eagle (17-8, 8-6 Freedom) turnovers for the game.
Game time for Wednesday is set for 6:00 pm at Misericordia. The Bulldogs will be making its 15th straight appearance in the Freedom Conference playoffs.
