Center Valley, PA (March 30, 2012) – Senior
Nick Chiovitti plated two runs with an infield single in the eighth inning and freshman
Trevor Connors pitched two terrific innings of relief leading the DeSales University baseball team past Eastern University, 6-4, in a hard fought and well-played game on both sides Friday afternoon at Butz Field.
These two teams will look to finish its three-game weekend set on Sunday now as the doubleheader scheduled for Saturday afternoon has already been postponed due to the forecasted weather on Saturday with a start time on Sunday set for 1:00 pm.
DSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on three two-out hits including a single from senior
Ethan Moser, a triple from senior
Jason Hadinger, and a double by
Derek Chrismer. The Bulldogs were held in check over the next four innings before plating two more runs in the sixth on a double steal of home plate and an EU error after an infield single from junior
Justin Scerbo that plated Chrismer.
Eastern was finally able to get to junior
Colby Pacillo in the top of the seventh. After consecutive singles put runners on first and second, a one-out walk loaded the bases. EU's
Andre Butler then hit a bases clearing double down the left-field line making it a one run game and later scored on an RBI groundout after taking third base on a wild pitch.
DSU went quietly in its half of the seventh and the Eagles threatened again in the top of the eight putting its first two runners on-base to start the inning. Connors entered the game with no one out and two runners and was able to wiggle out of the jam retiring three of the next four hitters to preserve the tie game.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs first two hitters were retired but Hadinger kept the inning alive with a base hit to left-field. He moved to second on a walk by Chrismer and another walk by Scerbo loaded the bases with two outs. After a 3-0 count to Chiovitt, EU's
John Taylor battled back to a full count, but Chiovitti chopped a high hopper over the second base bag that glanced off the shortstop's glove on the next pitch, allowing two runners to score before the Scerbo was tug out at third base on the errant bounce.
Connors did the rest, stranding a lead-off double off the wall in the ninth inning to earn his first career win, pitching two scoreless frames, striking out three. Pacillo pitched very well to start, lasting 6.1 innings allowing six hits and striking out six.
Hadinger finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and RBI, Chrismer was 3-for-3 and was on-base four times, scoring twice, while Chiovitti had two hits and two RBIs in the win.
