Swoyersville, PA (April 13, 2012) – The DeSales University baseball team had one bad inning defensively and it turned out to be the difference as Misericordia University scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning and hung on late to earn a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs in the first game of three-game weekend set on Friday afternoon in Freedom Conference action.

After allowing the first two batters of the game to reach in the first inning junior Colby Pacillo retired 15 of the next 17 batters, including 14-straight, before running into trouble in the sixth inning.

The first batter reached on an error on the Bulldog (19-9, 11-2 Freedom) second baseman and Pacillo hit the second batter to put runners on first and second with no one out.  Pacillo then forced the next batter to ground to shortstop, as DSU looked to turn two, but the Bulldogs were unable to complete the double play, getting just the lead runner at second.

Pacillo recorded the second out, picking off the runner at first, leaving a runner at third with two outs, but the next six batters all reached base as the Cougars (25-4, 11-2 Freedom) scored four unearned runs to take a 4-0 lead.

MU's Jeff Slanovec started the string with a double down the right-field line and Nate Hamlin followed with an RBI single thru the left side.  Pacillo then walked the next two hitters to load the bases.  Freshman Tyler Harris entered the game and walked the first two batters he faced to force in two more runs giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead before the third out was recorded.

DSU got one run back in the eighth inning when senior Nick Chiovitti singled home fellow senior Jason Hadinger and the Bulldogs had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth inning but Hadinger flew out to centerfield to end the threat and the game.

Pacillo finished the outing, pitching 5.2 innings allowing just four hits and four unearned runs, walking four and striking out five.  It was his first loss of the season.

These same two teams will wrap-up the three-game set this weekend tomorrow at Butz Field with first pitch for game one set for 1:00 pm.
