Travis Hughes earned his fourth win of the season leading the DeSales University baseball team to a win in game two, 4-3, salvaging a split of its Freedom Conference doubleheader with Misericordia University after an 8-0 loss in game one on Saturday afternoon at Butz Field.
The split moves both teams to 12-3 in the Freedom Conference standings, tied at the top, with six games remaining on each team's schedule over the final two weekends. The split also clinches a Freedom Conference playoff spot for the Bulldogs (20-10, 12-3 Freedom), their 13th Freedom Conference playoff appearance, and the third straight.
In the opener, Misericordia (26-5, 12-3 Freedom) scored in five of the seven innings and took a 4-0 lead thru three frames with three runs in the third inning. Seven of MU's eight runs came with two outs, and four were unearned runs in the game one win.
The Bulldogs best chance came in the bottom of the fourth inning trailing 4-0, when they had runners on 1st and 2nd, no one out, and bases loaded and one out, but were unable to score any runs in the inning. Junior
David Drinks took the loss allowing 10 hits over 4.2 innings striking out five.
In the second game, DSU struck first scoring three times in the second inning on a Cougar balk and a two-run double from Ridge. The Bulldogs then added a solo run in the third on a sacrifice fly from junior
Justin Scerbo plating senior
Nick Chiovitti who doubled to lead-off the inning.
Miseri fought back and had bases loaded, one out, in the fourth inning but Hughes retired the final two hitters without allowing a run, but the Cougars broke thru in the fifth scoring three runs on three hits before Hughes left a runner stranded clinging to a one-run lead.
In the top of the sixth, an error on the Bulldogs with two outs extended the inning, but freshman
Trevor Connors entered the game to record the third out and worked a hit batter to lead-off the seventh inning to earn his fourth save of the year and preserve the game two win.
Senior
Jason Hadinger had two of DSU's seven hits in game two. Hughes earned his fourth win pitching 5.2 innings allowing six hits and striking out three.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday when they host Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
