Bulldogs Take Two from King’s; Sweep Third Straight Series

Senior Kenny Ridge had five hits, five RBIs, and four runs scored in the doubleheader sweep over King's on Monday.

Center Valley, PA (April 9, 2012) – Senior Kenny Ridge reached base eight of nine at-bats and finished with five hits in the doubleheader leading the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of King's Colleg,e 13-4 and 10-9, as the Bulldogs completed its third straight three-game sweep of a Freedom Conference opponent on Monday afternoon.

The Bulldogs improve to 19-8 overall and 11-1 in the Freedom Conference, a half-game ahead of Misericordia University, who DSU takes on this upcoming weekend in a three-game set.  King's College falls to 9-15 overall and 3-9 in the Freedom Conference.

In the first game on Monday, the Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four more tallies in the fourth inning and never looked back from there, leading 11-2 after four frames.

Ridge finished game one 1-for-1 with four runs scored and three walks, while also stealing three bases.  Senior Ethan Moser was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, junior Brian Mauro was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs, senior Jason Hadinger finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, and sophomore Mark Fuse had two hits and two RBIs in the game one win.

Junior David Drinks earned his fourth win of the season, tossing five innings allowing just two runs and seven hits, striking out four.  Junior Brendan Duffy also pitched well with 1.2 scoreless innings to finish the game.

In the second game, King's jumped out to a 5-1 lead, scoring five times in the second inning, three of which were unearned runs.  DeSales had the answer scoring four times in the bottom of the second to tie the game at five and took an 8-6 lead after five thanks to two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.

The Monarchs refused to give in however, scoring once in the sixth and once more in the seventh on three straight two-out hits to tie the game at eight entering extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, King's scored one run on a bases loaded walk, but the Bulldogs got a lead-off single from junior Derek Chrismer in the bottom of the eighth and eventually loaded the bases after a sacrifice bunt, hit batter, and intentional walk for Ridge, who laced a single up the middle that scored both Chrismer and junior Justin Scerbo from second with the winning run.

Ridge finished game two, 4-for-4 with five RBIs, Scerbo was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, Mauro had two more hits and scored twice, and freshman Drew Borger was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.  Freshman Trevor Connors earned the win, despite allowing two runs and walking five over 2.2 innings pitched.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Swarthmore College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
