Center Valley, PA (January 16, 2013) – Junior
Sondrine Glovas recorded her third double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds and the DeSales University women's basketball overcame a poor start to the game to earn a 77-62 win over Misericordia University in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
Glovas moves within nine points of becoming the 19th player in school-history to score 1,000 career points as she led three players in double digits for the Bulldogs (11-5, 3-2 Freedom). Senior
Colleen Gavin also reached double figures with 18 points, 12 in the second-half, and junior
Alexiah Grant had 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in the win. Senior
Taylor Greene also played well with six assists and no turnovers in 28 minutes at the point.
The Cougars (8-6, 3-2 Freedom) stormed out of the gates opening up a 10-0 lead as the Bulldogs started the game missing 12 of their first 13 shots. MU continued to lead by 11 points (19-8) before DSU began to chip away.
A 10-2 run by the Bulldogs cut the margin down to three points (21-18) as Glovas scored eight of the 10 points and DSU took its first lead of the game at the 5:34 mark on a lay-up from Glovas. The two teams went back-and-forth to finish the half with DeSales clinging to a one-point advantage (39-38).
The Cougars reclaimed the lead at the 14:41 mark of the second-half (47-46) and still led by one (54-53) with 10:30 left to play before the Bulldogs took control. DSU used a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 63-54 lead and after Misericordia got within five with 5:14 to go, the Bulldogs scored the next four points to re-gain the nine point cushion with just three minutes left and cruised the rest of the way.
Misericordia shot 58.1 percent in the first-half but the Bulldogs held them to just 33.3 percent shooting in the second-half. DeSales also forced 26 turnovers and committed just 11 of its own in the win.
The Cougars were led by
Hannah Seely's 19 points, while
Tyann McDaniel added 14 points and
Lauren Smicherko finished with 12 points in the loss.
The Bulldogs have now won six straight at home but will take to the road in their next two games including a match-up with Eastern University on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm.
