St. David's, PA (January 19, 2013) – Eastern University used a 17-0 second-half run turning a 10-point deficit into a seven point lead and held off a late surge by DeSales University as the Bulldogs fell to the Eagles, 69-66, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Colleen Gavin led the Bulldogs (11-6, 3-3 Freedom) with her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Junior
Alexiah Grant finished with 15 points, junior
Faith Gilbert had nine points off the bench, and senior
Taylor Greene finished with six points and seven assists in the loss.
A 10-1 run early in the first-half gave DeSales a 19-12 lead led by two three's from Gilbert and another from Grant but EU (7-10, 3-3 Freedom) scored seven straight to tie the game at 19 with 8:31 left.
An 8-1 Bulldog run later in the half extending DSU's to lead to eight (34-26) before taking a seven-point advantage into the locker room.
DeSales continued to be in control early in the half leading by nine (42-33) before an 11-3 Eagles run cut the lead down to one (45-44) with 13:52 left to play.
The Bulldogs answered with a 10-1 run led by three's from both Gilbert and fellow junior
Julia Duffy to take a 55-45 lead with 11:39 remaining.
Eastern took control from there, using a 17-0 run over the next 6:10 to lead 62-55. The Bulldogs fought back and eventually tied the game at 64 with 3:14 to go on a lay-up from Glovas.
Trailing by one after two freebies from Greene with 57 seconds left, Grant got a steal and Greene was fouled again on the ensuing possession but she missed the front end of a one-and-one and EU knocked down two free throws making it a three-point game as a Glovas three with three seconds left was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.
The Bulldogs attempted 20 more shots than the Eagles but EU shot 46.9 percent from the field negating the advantage. EU also enjoyed a 46-34 edge on the glass, while the Bulldogs forced Eastern into 26 turnovers for the game. DSU shot just 26.7 percent (8-for-30) from three-point land.
Sophomore
Meghan Nowak also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while
Kaitlyn Dougherty and
Gina DiDomenico each tallied 15 points in the win.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound on Wednesday when they travel to Manhattanville College for another Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
