Center Valley, PA (January 26, 2013) – After shooting just 25.0 percent in the first-half and trailing by four points at the break the DeSales University women's basketball team shot 50.0 percent in the second-half and out-scored King's College by 19 points over the final 20 minutes in a 63-48 win in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
Three players reached double digits including junior
Sondrine Glovas with a game-high 19 points while also pulling down 10 rebounds, dishing out six assists, and swiping five steals in the win. The double-double is her fourth of the year. Junior
Alexiah Grant played all 40 minutes and finished with 14 points and nine rebounds while also not committing a turnover and senior
Colleen Gavin became the 20th player in school-history to score 1,000 career points with 10 points, all in the second-half, and seven rebounds in the win.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half as the Lady Monarchs were just slightly better from the field than the Bulldogs, connecting on 26.5 percent from the field. The first 20 minutes featured four ties and five lead changes and with the score tied at 18, KC scored six of the final eight points to take a four-point advantage into the locker room.
The second-half was all DeSales. After the eighth tie of the game at 34 on a three from
Celia Rader with 13:01 left to play, the Bulldogs used a 13-2 run over the next 3:02 to take a 47-36 lead with 9:59 to play. Junior
Julia Duffy started the run with a three and Gavin scored six points during the spurt, including the 1,000th of her career.
After another Rader three cut the lead down to six points with 9:22 remaining but a three by Glovas and steal and feed to Grant on the break by Glovas pushed the lead right back up to 11 points with 8:02 to go.
The Lady Monarchs made one last push, cutting the margin down to six points once again with 6:02 left to play but an 11-0 run keyed by six straight points from Glovas put the outcome out of King's reach as the Bulldogs finished the game scoring 11 of the final 13 points.
Just like the first-half King's struggled from the field, shooting just 20.0 percent over the final 20 minutes, and 23.2 percent for the game. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 38.9 percent for the game. DSU also dominated the glass out-rebounding King's, 60-39.
In addition to the double digit scoring efforts, DSU also got a solid game from junior
Megan Gallagher with nine rebounds and sophomore
Alex Suk who has returned from injury and looked fresh in 16 minutes off the bench collecting seven points and seven rebounds. Freshman
Gabby Scott also played well at the point with three assists and just one turnover in 16 minutes running the offense.
King's got 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and seven steals from
Katlin Michaels and 12 points from Rader in the loss.
