DSU Holds off Second-Half Griffin Rally in 86-71 Win

Center Valley, PA (January 7, 2013) – Four players scored in double digits and the DeSales University women's basketball team scored a season-high 86 points holding off a second-half rally by Gwynedd-Mercy College in an 86-71 win over the Griffins for the Bulldogs fifth straight victory on Monday evening in Billera Hall.

Junior Sondrine Glovas led the way with 19 points, juniors Faith Gilbert and Alexiah Grant each scored 13 points, and junior Megan Gallagher recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

DSU led 17-13 at the 10-minute mark but exploded out of a timeout out-scoring the Griffins, 27-10, over the final 10 minutes to take a 44-23 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs forced 13 first-half turnovers by the Griffins and committed just eight miscues of their own.

GMC came out fired up to open the second-half, quickly cutting the 21-point deficit down to just six points (52-46) over the first 5:19 with a 23-8 run.

Gwynedd trailed by eight (55-47) at the 13:29 mark when DSU regained control using an 8-0 run led by five points from Glovas to push the lead back up to 16 points (63-47) at the 10:50 mark and led by double digits the rest of the way en route to its fifth straight victory.

Senior Colleen Gavin and freshman Brittany Pierzga combined to score 16 points and grab 15 rebounds at the five position and senior Taylor Greene had seven assists in the win.

DSU dominated the glass out-rebounding Gwynedd-Mercy, 53-37, and out-scored GMC, 24-8, in fast break points.  The Bulldogs shot 73.5 percent (25-for-34) from the free throw line.

Gwynedd was led by Nicole Dougherty and Shea Wassel with 18 points each, while Natasha Matthews (15 points) and CJ Hilliard (10 points) also reached double figures.

DeSales returns to action on Wednesday, January 7th when they return to Freedom Conference action traveling to King's College for a 6:00 pm tip.
