Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 9, 2013) – Junior
Alexiah Grant scored a career-high 32 points and tied the game with one free throw with 21 seconds left but two free throws by King's College with 5.3 seconds left broke the tie and a last second attempt by the Bulldogs was turned over as the Bulldogs saw their five-game win streak snapped, 64-61, at Scandlon Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
Grant tied her career-high at the half and finished with 32 tallies on 13-of-27 shooting, while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Junior
Sondrine Glovas added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds but no other Bulldog had more than four points in the game.
The game featured 13 ties including one at 58 with 2:46 left to play. KC's
Molly Dahl broke that tie with a back-breaking three as the buzzer on the shot clock sounded to give the Lady Monarchs a 61-58 lead with 1:19 to go.
Grant answered with a jumper to pull the Bulldogs with one, 61-60, and after a steal by Grant on the other end, she was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 61 with 21 ticks left.
King's came down on the other end and
Lindsay Atchison let go on a three from the top of the key with 5.3 seconds left and her shot was off the mark but junior
Megan Gallagher was called for a foul on the shot giving Atchison three shots as she knocked down two of them.
After a timeout, the Bulldogs attempted a long pass over the top that was tipped loose and the Lady Monarchs grabbed the loose ball as
Ashley Davies hit 1-of-2 free throws to cement the win as DeSales was unable to get off a last second shot.
King's held a 26-17 lead in the first-half with 3:44 to go before the Bulldogs finished the half on a 17-0 run to take a 33-26 advantage into the locker room. Grant led all scorers with 19 points at the break, tying her career-high.
The Bulldogs came into the game forcing an average of 26.1 turnovers per game but forced just eight on Wednesday and committed 29 of their own leading to 27 of the Lady Monarch 64 points. DSU did dominate the glass, out-rebounding King's, 49-28.
King's was led by Dahl with 15 points, while seniors
Katlin Michaels and Atchison each added 12 points. Michaels also had eight assists and eight steals for the Lady Monarchs.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they host Delaware Valley College in Freedom Conference action beginning at 1:00 pm in Billera Hall.
