Center Valley, PA (December 14, 2013) – The DeSales University women's basketball team forced 27 Muhlenberg turnovers and held the Mules to just 27.5 percent shooting en route to a 56-46 win over one of its local rivals on a snowy Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
Senior
Alexiah Grant was the story on the offensive end, pouring in a game-high 23 points and adding six steals to lead DeSales. Senior
Megan Gallagher was just one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards, while senior
Sondrine Glovas (9 points) and junior
Alex Suk (8 points, 8 boards) also contributed.
Leanna Tallamy and
Emily Lesher each had a team-high 12 points for the Mules in the loss.
The game did not start out well for the Bulldogs as they missed 18 of their first 20 shots but were within striking distance because of their defense which held Muhlenberg to just nine points during that stretch.
A three from Gallagher removed the lid from the hoop and DSU finished the half 8-of-14 from the field, erasing an nine-point deficit (17-8) with a 16-5 run to end the half for a 24-22 halftime lead. Grant caught fire during the half ending run, scoring 13 of the 16 points.
The second-half was more of the same as each team struggled to score on the offensive end combining to shoot 16-for-57 (28.1%) but the Bulldogs hit two three's in the half as compared to none for the Mules and DSU was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. MC shot 10-of-17 from the charity stripe in the second-half.
It remained a two-point game (35-33) with 12:37 left to play when the Bulldogs used a 15-1 run over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach as DSU held a commanding 50-34 lead with just over five minutes left to play. The senior trio of Glovas (5), Gallagher (4), and Grant (4) combined for 13 of the 15 points during the run as Muhlenberg never got any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Turnovers were a huge part of the game with Muhlenberg committing 27 and DSU coughing up the rock just 13 times leading to 15 more shots for the Bulldogs. MC dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 56-37, but scored just seven second-chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds.
The Bulldogs will now break for the holidays before returning to action on Sunday, December 29th at the Juniata College Holiday Tournament taking on St. Vincent College in the opening game of the tournament.
