DSU Advances to Tournament Championship with Win over St. Vincent

Sophomore Gabby Scott had seven assists and just one turnover in the win over St. Vincent College.

Huntingdon, PA (December 29, 2013) – Seniors Sondrine Glovas and Alexiah Grant combined for 42 of DSU's 80 points in an 80-73 win over St. Vincent College in the opening game of the 2013 Comfort Inn Holiday Tournament hosted by Juniata College on Sunday evening.

The Bulldogs advance to play Muskingum College, a 74-70 winner over host Juniata in the other opening day game, at 4:00 pm on Monday afternoon.

Glovas finished with 23 points and added eight rebounds, while Grant netted 19 points, including a team-high three treys.  Junior Alex Suk had a monster game on the boards pulling down a career-high 17 caroms and senior Megan Gallagher finished with seven points and 11 boards.  Sophomore Gabby Scott had six points and seven assists to just one turnover and junior Mikelyn Mackavage led the charge off the bench with nine points.

St. Vincent had three players reach double digits including Taylor Mathers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Ally Schmidt with 14 points, and Jill Kegg finished with 11 points.

The Bulldogs started slow, falling behind 13-7 just under six minutes into the game but three's from Mackavage and Glovas keyed a 10-0 run giving DSU a 17-13 lead.

SVC tied the game at 20 but nine straight points, including five from Glovas and four from Grant, gave DSU a 29-20 advantage with 5:50 to play in the opening half.  St. Vincent pulled within three once before a lay-up from Grant with seven seconds left gave the Bulldogs a 43-36 halftime lead.

The Bearcats got within two points early (43-41) but the Bulldogs never lost their lead.  It remained a close game at the 9:32 mark with DSU holding a 60-56 lead before a 13-1 run over the next five minutes put the game away with the Bulldogs taking a 73-57 lead with 4:20 remaining.

The Bulldogs hit 8-of-19 from three-point land (42.1%) and dominated the glass, out-rebounding SVC, 55-38.  DSU only committed 11 turnovers in the win.
