Madison, NJ (February 10, 2013) – The DeSales University men's basketball team shot 60.9 percent from the field in the second-half and used an 8-0 game clinching run to earn a 64-55 win over FDU-Florham on Sunday afternoon clinching at least one of the top two spots in the Freedom Conference playoffs with two games left in the regular season.
Junior
Paul Pammer led all scorers with 16 points and junior
Mike Coleman finished with 12 points leading 10 players in the scoring column for the Bulldogs. Senior
Greg Peters led a strong showing by the Bulldogs bench with eight points and five rebounds in just 12 minutes. DSU's bench out-scored FDU's, 23-7.
The first-half alone featured seven ties and four lead changes as the Bulldogs clung to a one-point halftime lead (25-24). Eight players reached the scoring column led by Pammer with five points in the opening half.
The start of the second-half was more of the same with three more ties, including the final one of the game coming at 38-all with 12:38 left to play. DSU scored seven straight points, including a three from sophomore
Jake Hungarter to take a 45-38 lead but the Devils answered with four straight to pull within three at 45-42.
Out of an FDU timeout, Peters hit an off-balance jumper just outside the lane igniting an 8-0 run over the next 2:15 giving DSU an 11-point lead (53-42) that included a dunk on the break by Coleman after a gorgeous steal and long pass from Peters. The Bulldogs hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the win as FDU got no closer than eight points over the final 5:50.
The Bulldogs shot 49.0 percent for the game and committed just 11 turnovers in the win.
FDU had three players reach double digits including
Trevor Sykes with 14 points,
Will Green with 12 points, and
Mike Williamson with 10 points.
DeSales has a quick turnaround, returning to action on Tuesday when they host Wilkes University, winners of four straight, in Freedom Conference action at 8:00 pm.
