Alexiah Grant and
Sondrine Glovas combined to score 54 of DeSales' 72 points carrying the Bulldogs past Manhattanville College, 72-64, for DSU's fifth straight win and its eighth straight at home clinching a Freedom Conference playoff berth for the 16th straight season on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
Glovas tallied a game-high 29 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double of the season. Grant started the game 1-for-9 but finished very strong, hitting on 8 of her last 13 to total 25 points, 21 of which came in the second-half. Freshman
Brittany Pierzga added seven points off the bench and senior
Taylor Greene had another solid floor game with eight assists and just one turnover.
DSU has now clinched its 16th straight post-season playoff appearance in the Freedom Conference having never missed the Freedom post-season since joining the conference at the start of the 1997-98 season.
The Bulldogs did not trail in the first-half but just couldn't pull away from the Valiants as sophomore
Alyson Caiazzo had a huge opening 20 minutes with 16 points and 15 boards in just the first-half keeping Manhattanville close.
MC did tie the game at 26 with 2:11 to play in the opening half when Glovas scored five straight points and DSU clung to a four-point lead (32-28) at the break. Glovas scored 15 of her game-high 29 in the opening half.
In the second half, DeSales took control using a 15-3 run after Manhattanville scored the first bucket of the half to take a 47-33 lead with 15:30 to go. Grant and Glovas had 13 of the 15 points during the spurt.
The Valiants still trailed by 14 with 14:03 to go when they used an 18-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 53-52 lead with 8:01 left to play. Senior
Taylor Wilson was the catalyst with 10 of MC's 18 points during the spurt.
The game went back and forth the rest of the way and was a one-point affair after a Wilson trey with 1:30 on the clock. Grant missed a short jumper but senior
Colleen Gavin battled MC's Caiazzo for the rebound giving DSU a second shot and this time Grant knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing, giving DSU a four-point lead and the Bulldogs hit 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch for the win.
Caiazzo finished with 23 points and 24 rebounds in the loss and Wilson totaled 22 points and nine rebounds, 20 of which came in the second-half.
The Bulldogs took 23 more shots thanks in part to their defense which forced Manhattanville into 31 turnovers for the game. DeSales scored 30 points off those 31 miscues.
The Bulldogs take to the road once again on Saturday when they visit FDU-Florham in another important Freedom Conference game.
