Dillard/Drinks Lead Sweep of Cardinal Stritch on Final Day of Trip

Sophomore Eric Dillard did not allow an earned run over 12 innings pitched during DSU's spring trip out to San Antonio, TX.

San Antonio, TX (March 8, 2013) – Senior David Drinks and sophomore Eric Dillard each pitched gems with Drinks going six innings scattering seven hits and allowing one run in game one and Dillard also going six innings allowing just three hits and striking out four in game two to lead the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Cardinal Stritch University, 12-1 and 6-0, on Friday afternoon in the final day of its spring break trip.

The Bulldogs finish their trip with a 4-3 record evening their season record to 4-4 overall.  Senior Brian Mauro led all hitters with a .500 average including a team-high six RBIs during the trip and Dillard was impressive on the mound totaling a team-high 12 innings pitched allowing just two unearned runs, striking out nine and opponent's batting just .150 off him.

In game one on Friday, DSU broke open a scoreless game in the third with three runs in the third including an RBI double from junior Mark Westdyk, a solo run in the fourth on an RBI single from freshman Steven Wallace, and six runs in the fifth inning.

Drinks did the rest scattering seven innings over six innings, walking three and striking out one.  Senior Justin Scerbo had two hits and two runs scored, freshman Alec Hardy scored twice, and Wallace and junior Mark Fuse also had two hits and two runs scored in the win.

In game two, Dillard was dominant allowing just three base runners thru six innings and retiring CSU in order in the second, third, and sixth innings.  He earned his first win of the season and finished the trip not walking a single batter and striking out nine in 12 innings pitched.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the first and added one more in the third and two in the sixth on RBI hits from senior Jack Kavetski and Fuse.

Scerbo had two more hits and two more runs scored while Mauro and Westdyk also had two hits in the win as the top five hitters in the order went 8-for-15 with all six runs scored and one RBI.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, March 13th when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
