Bullpen Unable to Hold Lead in 11-9 Loss at Montclair State

Montclair, NJ (March 26, 2013) – The Bulldogs took an 8-4 lead thru five and a half innings after scoring five times in the top of the sixth inning but the bullpen was unable to make the lead stand surrendering seven runs over the next two innings in an 11-9 loss at Montclair State University on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.

DSU (9-5) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped in the loss.  The Bulldogs jumped out early scoring three times in the first inning on three hit batters, one walk, and just one hit.

DeSales continued to lead 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning when the Red Hawks scored three times to take a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs responded with five runs in the top of the sixth inning to lead 8-4.  Senior Brian Mauro had the big blow, a three-run double down the right-field line with two outs in the inning.

MSU responded right back jumping all over the Bulldogs bullpen scoring three times in the sixth to pull within 8-7 and took an 11-8 lead in the seventh with four more tallies.

DSU got one run back in the top of the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs but a ground out ended the threat, snapping the Bulldogs streak at seven.

Mauro was outstanding in the loss going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBIs.  Senior Justin Scerbo added two hits, a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base in the loss.  Senior Jack Kavetski scored twice and junior Mark Westdyk had two more hits.

Senior David Drinks earned a no-decision allowing three earned runs over five solid innings of work surrendering just six hits and striking out three.  Junior Tyler Reyes also pitched well, tossing two shutout innings allowing just one hit.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday when they return to Freedom Conference play at Eastern University beginning at 3:30 pm.
