Center Valley, PA (March 30, 2013) – The Bulldogs used a five-run sixth inning in game one to earn a come-from-behind win and freshman
Steven Wallace was impressive in game two earning his second win of the season with six strong innings leading the DeSales University baseball team past PSU-Berks, 10-6 and 9-6, in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, the Nittany Lions jumped out on top with four runs in the top of the second inning to lead 4-0. DSU chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the innings on a two-run double by sophomore
Nick Fischer, one in the third on a Nittany Lion error and took a 5-4 lead in the fifth with two unearned runs including the last scoring on a double from senior
Brian Mauro.
PSU-Berks wasn't done though, re-taking the lead (6-5) in the top of the sixth inning with two runs but the Bulldogs refused to die scoring five times in the bottom of the inning to post the final 10-6 margin. Junior
Charles Dennis had the big blow in the sixth, a pinch-hit, bases clearing, three-run double to give DSU an 8-6 lead. Senior
Jack Kavetski also had an RBI double in the inning.
Freshman
Chris Zampini earned his first win of the season pitching 1.2 solid innings of relief allowing just two hits and striking out one. Junior
Mark Fuse had two hits and two runs scored and senior
Justin Scerbo and junior
Mark Westdyk each scored twice in the win.
In game two, the Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Mauro, an RBI single from senior
Derek Chrismer, and an RBI groundout from Westdyk. Berks countered with two in the top of the second inning but a solo run in the second and two more in the third from the Bulldogs was all Wallace needed.
Wallace went six innings allowing five hits and striking out to earn his second win of the season. Fuse, Kavetski, and freshman
Ricky Alvarez each had two hits and Chrismer went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the game two win.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday when they host Eastern University in games two and three of its three-game set with the Eagles. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
