San Antonio, TX (March 8, 2013) – The DeSales University baseball team has posted a 2-3 record thru its first five games in its annual spring break trip out to San Antonio, TX heading into its final two games this afternoon vs. Cardinal Stritch University after a hard-fought 8-5 loss to #6 Trinity University late last night.
After opening the week with a 15-13 win over Houston-Victoria, the Bulldogs have gone 1-3 including losses to Mary-Hardin Baylor (3-0), Texas Lutheran (7-3), and Trinity (8-5), while also defeating Schreiner University, 8-3. DSU concludes its scheduled this afternoon playing Cardinal Stritch in a doubleheader at Trinity beginning at 1:00 pm (EST) looking to come home tomorrow with a 4-3 record on its trip and a 4-4 overall mark to start the season.

Mary-Hardin Baylor – 3, DeSales – 0
A scoreless game entering the bottom of the sixth inning saw MHB plate two runs and add an insurance tally in the eighth inning as the Bulldogs managed just five hits and made four costly errors leading to two of MHB's three runs in the loss. Senior
Brian Mauro had two of DSU's five hits and sophomore
Eric Dillard pitched very well despite the loss allowing just two unearned runs over six innings, striking out five and now issuing a walk.
DeSales – 8, Schreiner – 3
DSU's offense came alive with 16 hits and the Bulldogs stole seven bases as a four-run second inning gave DeSales a 4-0 lead and it never looked back in an 8-3 win in the third game of the trip. Freshman
Chris Polaski earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and junior
Tyler Reyes picked up a save pitching 1.1 innings allowing just one walk and striking out three. Mauro continued his torrid pace at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI's, junior
Mark Westdyk also stayed hot going 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, and junior
Charles Dennis knocked in three runs on two hits. Senior
Jack Kavetski went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases and senior
Justin Scerbo also stole two bases in the win.
Texas Lutheran – 7, DeSales – 3
In a battle of the Bulldogs, Texas Lutheran jumped out early scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead and DSU was unable to recover, recording just three hits in the game. Kavetski, Dennis, and junior
Mark Fuse has DSU's three hits and senior
Colby Pacillo suffered the loss allowing seven runs over 4.2 innings.
#6 Trinity – 8, DeSales – 5
DSU fell behind 5-2 after five innings to the sixth ranked team in the country, but battled back with three runs in the top of the seventh before the Tigers scored once in the seventh and then tallied two unearned runs in the eighth for the 8-5 win. Polaski suffered the loss allowing one run over 2.1 innings of relief work. Kavetski hit his first home run of the season and scored twice, while freshman
Alec Hardy also had two hits in the loss.
