Dan Gayeski went five innings allowing just one run and fellow senior
David Drinks went 5.2 innings allowing just two runs leading the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Eastern University, 11-2 and 4-2, on Monday afternoon finishing off a three-game sweep of the Eagles including its win over EU on Thursday.
In the opener on Monday, Gayeski allowed just five hits and struck out five over five frames and the Bulldog offense exploded for three runs in the third and sixth in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Gayeski improves to 3-1 on the year and lowers his ERA to 4.12 with a team high 24 innings pitched.
DSU took its 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI single from junior
Mark Fuse and an RBI double from senior
Brian Mauro. After Eastern countered with a run in the top of the fourth but the Bulldogs blew the game open with six in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI hits from senior
Jack Kavetski and Mauro and a two-RBI single from junior
Mark Westdyk.
Mauro and Westdyk each finished the game with two hits, Fuse knocked in three runs, and senior
Justin Scerbo and sophomore
Drew Borger both scored twice in the game one win.
In the second game, Drinks took a no-hitter into the fourth and allowed just five hits, one walk, and two runs over 5.2 innings, striking out six to improve to 2-0 on the year. Junior
Tyler Reyes pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning, getting the final out with runners on first and second and sophomore
Trevor Connors earned his third save of the season with a strikeout to end the game.
DSU did all of its scoring in the first two innings as Fuse knocked in Scerbo with an RBI single in the first and had another RBI hit in the second along with Kavetski, while Fuse came around to score on a balk later in the inning staking DSU to a 4-0 lead.
Fuse finished 3-for-3 with two RBI's, Scerbo scored two more runs out of the leadoff spot, and Borger stayed hot going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Bulldogs, who have now won 12 of their last 13 games, return to action tomorrow when they host Rutgers-Newark for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
