Center Valley, PA (April 13, 2013) – The DeSales University baseball team left the bases loaded in each of the last two innings as a late innings rally fell short with the Bulldogs falling to FDU-Florham, 8-6, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in the first of three games this weekend between the two teams.

The Devils got off to a quick start chasing DSU starter Eric Dillard in the fourth with four runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.  The Devils took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Nick Meoli and added two more unearned runs later in the inning.

The Bulldogs began chipping away scoring once in the bottom of the fourth on an FDU error and twice more in the fifth on a two-out two-run double from junior Mark Westdyk.  DSU went quietly in the sixth and seventh but loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on three hits and another Devil error with senior Brian Mauro at the plate, but Mauro flew out to leftfield ending the rally.

In the ninth, DSU trailed 8-6 with a run already in, the bases loaded and just one out but sophomore Drew Borger was caught looked and senior Justin Scerbo hit a comebacker to the pitcher ending the game.

Dillard suffered the loss allowing five earned runs over three innings pitched.  Sophomore Tyler Harris pitched great out of the bullpen keeping DSU close allowing just one run over 5.1 innings pitched.

Westdyk finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Fuse had three more hits, Fischer finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Borger had two hits in the loss.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they travel to FDU-Florham for games two and three of the weekend series needing a sweep to take the series and stay tied for the top spot in the Freedom Conference standings after Misericordia dropped one of two today at Delaware Valley College.
