Madison, NJ (April 14, 2013) – The DeSales University baseball team rebounded from losing the first game of a three-game set for the second time this season sweeping a road doubleheader, this time at FDU-Florham by scores of 4-3 in game one and 5-3 in 10 innings in game two on Sunday to win two of three from the Devils this weekend and stay atop the Freedom Conference standings with two three-game series left to play.
The Bulldogs had to fight back in each of the two wins on Sunday. In the opener FDU-Florham scored two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead. DSU got one run back in the fourth inning when junior
Mark Westdyk singled home senior
Brian Mauro, but FDU clung to a 2-1 lead as the game entered the sixth inning.
In the top of the sixth, DSU took the lead for good scoring three times to lead 4-2. Freshman
Alec Hardy singled home Westdyk with the tying run, freshman
Jake Yannessa had a pinch-hit RBI single scoring senior
Derek Chrismer and senior
Justin Scerbo knocked in Yanessa with an RBI ground out later in the inning.
FDU got one run back in the bottom of the inning and had the bases loaded with two outs but junior
Tyler Reyes got the final out on a line out to secure the lead. Reyes then worked around a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to record his third save of the season.
Senior
Dan Gayeski earned the win going 5.2 innings allowing just three hits and three runs, striking out three. Senior
Jack Kavetski had three hits and Westdyk finished with two hits to lead the offensive attack.
In the second game, the Devils again jumped out on top scoring three times in the bottom of the third inning but the Bulldogs immediately answered with two runs in the top of the third inning to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Kavetski and Westdyk each had RBI hits in the third inning.
The Bulldogs remained down one run entering the seventh inning when sophomore
Drew Borger singled to lead of the frame. A pop out by senior
Justin Scerbo and a groundout from junior
Mark Fuse moved Borger to second with two outs but Mauro came thru in a big spot singling home Borger with the tying run and sending the game into extra innings.
FDU threatened first in the bottom of the ninth inning loading the bases with one out but freshman
Chris Zampini got the second out on a strikeout and Borger made a sensational diving play to record the third out at first to send the game into the 10th inning.
In the top of the 10th Fuse led off with a single and scored on Mauro's double. Yannessa came into pinch-run and with two outs scored on an RBI double from Chrismer to give DSU an insurance run and a 5-3 lead.
After a walk and two hit batters the Devils once again had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th but this time sophomore
Tyler Harris entered the game to get the second out on a pop out and the final batter to fly out to centerfield earning his first save of the season in the win.
Zampini earned the win improving to 2-0 with one scoreless inning. Senior
Colby Pacillo was outstanding over the first eight innings allowing seven hits and three runs, striking out seven without walking a batter.
Mauro finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, Fuse had two hits as did Westdyk and Borger to lead the Bulldogs offensively.
DSU returns to action on Tuesday now as its game tomorrow has been pushed to Tuesday at Rutgers-Camden beginning at 3:30 pm.
