Dallas, PA (April 7, 2013) – The DeSales University baseball team only trailed once all day but unfortunately that one time came in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two as the Bulldogs were forced to settle for a doubleheader split at Misericordia University, winning game one, 7-6, before narrowly dropping game two, 5-4, in eight innings in Freedom Conference action.

Most importantly the Bulldogs take the season series winning 2-of-3 from the Cougars to own the tiebreaker between the two clubs as they each sit at 10-2 thus far in the Freedom Conference.

In the opener on Sunday, the Bulldogs scored three times in the first inning all with two outs to take a 3-0 lead and led 5-0 entering the bottom of the third inning before the Cougars started to rally back.  Senior Brian Mauro got things started with a solo home run in the first just before junior Mark Westdyk and senior Jack Kavetski each had RBI doubles later in the inning.

In the third, Kavetski had an RBI single and freshman Alec Hardy made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly to leftfield.  MU got three runs back in the bottom of the third and trailed 5-4 entering the fifth when the Bulldogs scored twice, once again on back-to-back doubles from Westdyk and Kavetski.

Miseri continued to chip away scoring once in the bottom of the fifth to trail 7-5 and MU's Andrew Tressa homered to lead off the seventh inning, but sophomore Trevor Connors entered the game after the HR and retired the Cougars in order to earn the save and preserve the game one win.

Senior David Drinks earned the win going four innings allowing five runs and nine hits.  Junior Tyler Reyes pitched out of a fifth inning jam and retired the side in order in the sixth before Connors closed it out in the seventh.

Mauro finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, senior Derek Chrismer scored three times, Westdyk had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs, and Kavetski went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

In the second game, DSU was in complete control for five and a half innings before running into trouble.  DSU broke open a scoreless game in the third when Westdyk came thru once again with a two-out bases clearing double to make it 3-0 and the Bulldogs made it 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI single from Chrismer but had one runner pegged down at the plate and left the bases loaded in the sixth.

Misericordia finally got to senior Colby Pacillo in the sixth.  Pacillo had been tremendous thru the first five, retiring the side in order three times and only allowing two base-runners past first base, but in the sixth opened the inning with back-to-back walks, his first two of the day, and the Cougars followed with two straight singles to make it 4-2.

After a sacrifice bunt, MU's Joe Tagliarini came up clutch with a two-RBI double before the side was retired with the game tied at four thru six innings.

In the top of the seventh, DSU had its lead-off man on a Kavetski single and moved him to third base on a ground out and sacrifice bunt but were unable to bring him home.  Miseri went quietly in the seventh as the game moved to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Chrismer laced a two-out double but was left stranded and the Cougars won the game in the bottom of the eighth without registering a hit as the Bulldogs made two errors and issued two walks, one intentional, giving MU a 5-4 win.

Connors suffered the hard luck loss allowing the game-winning unearned run in the eighth.  Pacillo finished pitching 5.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs, while striking out three.

Chrismer had two more hits as did Westdyk to go along with three RBIs.  Junior Charles Dennis also had two hits in the game two loss.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, April 10th when they travel to Swarthmore College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
