Center Valley, PA (May 1, 2013) – The DeSales University baseball team scored four times in the sixth inning and three more times in the seventh en route to a 10-2 win over local rival Muhlenberg College giving the Bulldogs 30 wins for the fifth time in school-history and the first time since the 2005 season on Wednesday afternoon.
DSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior
Justin Scerbo singled, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single up the middle by junior
Mark Fuse one batter later.
Muhlenberg briefly held a 2-1 lead in the fourth when they scored two unearned runs but the Bulldogs tied it in the bottom of the inning when senior
Brian Mauro doubled and scored two batters later on a single from junior
Charles Dennis.
It remained a tie game heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when DeSales broke it open with four runs on three hits. Dennis had another RBI single scoring Mauro, sophomore
Nick Fischer knocked in senior
Jack Kavetski on a sacrifice fly to centerfield, freshman
Alec Hardy doubled home Dennis, and Borger singled, knocking in Hardy.
DSU added to its lead in the seventh on three consecutive RBI singles from Fischer, senior
Derek Chrismer, and freshman
Evan Fraser and scored an unearned run in the eighth to provide the final tally.
Sophomore
Eric Elmer earned the win pitching three strong innings of relief not allowing a hit and striking out two. Sophomore
Eric Dillard allowed just three hits over four innings including two unearned runs and struck out four.
All nine starters had a hit including Mauro who finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and raised his season average to .511. Scerbo had two more hits and scored once, Kavetski scored twice, Dennis had two hits and two RBIs, and Fischer finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead the offensive attack.
The Bulldogs are off on Thursday and return to action on Friday when they open play in the Freedom Conference playoffs at 7:30 pm vs. FDU-Florham at Quakertown's Memorial Park.
