Quakertown, PA (May 3, 2013) – Junior Charles Dennis infield single to shortstop with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth plated fellow junior Mark Fuse giving the Bulldogs an 8-7 come-from-behind win over FDU-Florham in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Championship at Quakertown's Memorial Park on Friday evening under the lights.

The #2 seeded Bulldogs (31-10) advance into the winner's bracket where they will face the #4 seed, Manhattanville College, who upset top seed Misericordia University, 2-1, in 10 innings in the other first round game on Friday.  First pitch is set for 3:00 pm tomorrow.

DSU had control thru the first seven innings of this game before the Devils plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead, its first lead of the game.  DeSales went quietly in the bottom of the inning and with one out in the bottom of the ninth, senior Justin Scerbo got things started with a chopper over the mound that he beat out at first base and advanced to second on an errant throw by the second baseman.

Fuse singled to shortstop putting runners on first and third with one out and senior Brian Mauro laced a single thru the right-side on the first pitch he saw to tie the score at seven and Fuse had some heads up base running going from first to third on the play keeping it runners on the corners with still just one out.

FDU intentionally walked senior Jack Kavetski to load the bases and fellow senior Derek Chrismer struck out swinging giving the Devils two outs.  Dennis was down in the count 0-2 but fouled off a few pitches and worked the count to 1-2 before sending a high chopper to shortstop.  The SS fielded the ball cleanly and made a throw to first but Dennis hustled down the line and beat the throw by a few steps as Fuse crossed the plate with the winning run and an exploding Bulldog dugout.

DSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Chrismer, added one more in the second on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Drew Borger and led 3-1 thru four innings after an RBI single by Fuse in the fourth.

FDU pulled to within 3-2 but two more Bulldog runs in the fifth made it 5-2 on an RBI double from freshman Alec Hardy and sacrifice fly from freshman Evan Fraser.  The Devils again pulled to within one, 5-4, in the top of the seventh but DSU scored once to make it 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Scerbo scored from first on a Fuse single and bobble by the FDU right-fielder setting up the final two innings.

Sophomore Eric Elmer earned his third win of the season pitching a strong one inning of relief, retiring all three hitters he faced on just four pitches.  Senior David Drinks also pitched well lasting 6+ plus innings allowing just four hits and three runs, striking out three.

Scerbo finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Fuse had three hits and two runs scored, and Mauro was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three walks.  Dennis and Hardy each had two hits and knocked in a run in the win.

The win is #599 for head coach Tim Neiman who will look to become just the 38th coach in NCAA Division III history to win 600 career games tomorrow vs. Manhattanville College.
