Center Valley, PA (September 21, 2013) – A misplayed ball early in the first overtime led to a hard luck loss for the DeSales University women's soccer on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Alvernia University in a non-conference affair.
After both teams battled thru 90 minutes of action with each squad narrowly misfiring on scoring opportunities the game headed into the first overtime period scoreless.
Just 1:40 into the first extra period, AU's
Devon Reeves played a ball just inside the midfield stripe back into the Bulldogs defensive box. DSU's
Michelle Churchman charged off her line to corral the ball in mid-air but on a very windy afternoon misjudged the kick as the ball bounced over her head and towards the goal mouth.
Churchman hustled to intercept the ball before it crossed the line and did so, but was only able to tap the ball away and the Crusaders'
Shannon Browne followed the play and kicked the ball into the net for the game-winner.
Churchman was outstanding prior to the misplay all afternoon, making eight saves, leading the Bulldogs into the overtime period as Alvernia held a 14-5 advantage in shots in the game.
DSU has exactly a week off before looking to get back in the win column when it hosts Widener University on homecoming next Saturday beginning at 12:30 pm.
