Dallas, PA (January 22, 2014) – Misericordia University erased a five-point deficit over the final 4:28 to earn a 57-56 win over the DeSales University men's basketball team in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening at the Anderson Center.

Sophomore Cody Deal led the Bulldogs with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, and senior Kyle Hash added 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals for the Bulldogs (9-7, 3-2 Freedom).

Matt Greene led the Cougars with 16 points, hitting four three-pointers, and dishing out nine assists.  Erik Kerns also reached double digits with 10 points for Misericordia (8-7, 3-2 Freedom).

It was a five-point game at the 4:28 mark after senior Andrew Kohler hit a huge three-pointer from the right corner but on the very next possession saw a point blank lay-up roll off the rim as the Cougars took advantage with a three on the other end by Greene cutting the DSU lead down to two points with 3:28 to play.

Pammer got a three on the next possession that hit front rim as Deal ran down the rebound but his pass to Kohler under the hoop was picked off and MU's Griffin Spounagle hit a three in transition giving the Cougars a 55-54 lead with 2:29 to play.

After back-to-back three-point misses from both teams on the next two possessions DSU regained the lead on a lay-up from Kohler on a nice feed from Deal at the top of the key as Misericordia called timeout.

Out of the timeout, Steve Ware was isolated on the right portion of the foul line, drove right, and hit a short running jumper giving MU a 57-56 lead.

DSU called two timeouts to discuss the play and out of the timeout senior Paul Pammer drove left into the lane but his off-balance lay-up was short as the Cougars called timeout.

The Bulldogs fouled Spounagle out of the timeout with 10 seconds left and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 as senior Mike Coleman raced down the left side of the court, drove baseline but was met by a Cougar defender as the ball was knocked and recovered by Misericordia with one tick left.

Out of a timeout, the Cougars tossed the inbounds the length of the court as Ware grabbed the pass with time expiring before DSU could foul him.

DeSales was hot early as Deal and Hash combined for four three-pointers over the first 5:46 to give DSU a 14-9 lead.  MU used a 7-0 run midway thru the half to take a 23-19 lead before the two teams went back-and-forth over the final six minutes of the half with Misericordia owning a 29-28 lead at the break.

After the Cougars started the half with a bucket, DSU reeled off a 10-0 run capped by a pull-up jumper from Pammer just above the foul line giving the Bulldogs a 39-31 lead.  DeSales led the rest of the way until Spounagle's three with 2:29 left to play.

DeSales shot just 37.2 percent from the field and after hitting four of its first six three's to start the game, went just 3-for-18 the rest of the way from behind the arc.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they return home to host Eastern University in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
