Center Valley, PA (January 3, 2014) – The cold temps outside did not affect the shooting in Billera Hall on Friday night as the Bulldogs hit 10 three's, shooting 40.0 percent from outside the arc, en route to a 77-65 win over Ursinus College in non-conference action.
It is the fifth straight win for DeSales who improves to 9-2 overall, while the Bears fell to 5-4 overall despite also shooting, canning 50.9 percent from the field in the loss.
Seniors
Alexiah Grant (25 points) and
Sondrine Glovas (21 points) again led the way and senior
Megan Gallagher recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals. Glovas added six rebounds and five steals in the win. Junior
Mikelyn Mackavage led the way off the bench with eight points and the point guard tandem of sophomore
Gabby Scott and junior
Ciara O'Neill totaled nine assists and just two turnovers.
Libby Lannon led the Bears with 13 points and seven boards and
Jessica Porada added 11 tallies and six rebounds.
Tori Steinberg came off the bench to score nine points on three triples.
Ursinus scored the first two points of the game to lead 3-0 but DSU scored the next five points and never trailed the rest of the way. The Bulldogs extended a 10-7 lead into a 17-9 mark with a quick 7-2 run and slowly built as much as an 18-point first-half advantage on a three from Grant at the 2:27 mark.
DeSales hit five of its 10 three's in the first-half on just 10 attempts and shot 45.2 percent from the field overall.
Ursinus refused to go away and thanks to a 61.3 percent shooting clip over the final 20 minutes stayed within striking distance and eventually cut the margin down to single digits (71-63) with 1:39 to go, but a jumper from Gallagher on the left wing on a nice pass from junior
Alex Suk pushed the margin back to 10 points and the Bears ran out of time on their comeback attempt.
Ursinus came into the game averaging just 10.9 turnovers per game but the Bulldogs were forcing an average of 23.7 miscues per game and forced 19 bear turnovers leading to 18 points. Ursinus dominated the paint scoring 44 of its 65 points in the colored portion of the court. DSU took excellent care of the ball committing just nine turnovers as compared to 17 assists.
DSU returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Baruch College for a non-conference game beginning at 2:00 pm.
