Late Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Manhattanville

Center Valley, PA (October 14, 2014) – The DeSales University men's soccer team nearly erased a 3-0 deficit with just over seven minutes left scoring twice but fell one goal short in a 3-2 loss to Manhattanville College in a Freedom Conference game on Tuesday afternoon.

The Valiants (6-8, 2-1 Freedom) scored the only goal of the first-half in the 14th minute when Rob Hammerle got a leg on a corner kick feed by Michael Alcaraz in the box that re-directed into the goal for a 1-0 lead that stood into the half.

The game remained a one-goal game until 70:53 when Robin Schaufele scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Hammerle and Schaufele scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner in the 80th minute on a rebound of a shot that caromed off the post by Alcaraz at 79:22 to give the Valiants a 3-0 lead.

DSU (5-9-1, 0-3 Freedom) got on the board at 82:48 when sophomore Marcus Morris took control of a rebound of a saved header from sophomore Wes Frebel and hit the open net.  The Bulldogs continued the pressure and got within one goal with just 14 seconds left when freshman Joey Malvestuto scored off a rebound of another shot from Frebel that had connected with the crossbar but time ran out on the ensuing kickoff as MVC escaped with the 3-2 win.

The loss is the fourth straight for DeSales who were out-shot, 17-14, for the game.  The Valiants also had a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.  Senior Colin Sulpizio made five saves in between the pipes.

DSU returns to action on Saturday, October 18th when they travel to FDU-Florham for another Freedom Conference game beginning at 11:00 am.
